In honor of November’s GERD Awareness, we would like to introduce Dr. Rachel Lovano, general surgeon at Clinton Memorial Hospital since 2016 and provider of the LINX procedure for GERD.
When Dr. Lovano chose her career in medicine, she discovered that surgery was a perfect marriage of her love for science and art. “I have always enjoyed learning about anatomy,” she said. “It’s amazing that when faced with a surgical problem, we can remove, rearrange or fix something and solve the problem.”
Since 2021, Dr. Lovano has provided the laparoscopic LINX procedure for GERD patients at CMH and she has seen great results. “I’ve seen drastic improvements in my patients. The LINX device is a wonderful option for GERD and less invasive than other reflux surgery options,” Dr. Lovano said.
“My patients who’ve received LINX are able to eat what they want, and they no longer take heartburn medications. They eat their favorite foods. They sleep lying down. And, they wake up in the morning without a sore throat or cough,” Dr. Lovano explained. “It really can be life-changing.”
As a general surgeon, Dr. Lovano performs many kinds of procedures, including complex surgeries that require significant preparation. “For a tough case, I study! I spend a lot of time preparing, reading, watching videos, researching, and really digging in to ensure I am ready to best help my patients,” Dr. Lovano said. “In healthcare, it is so important that we stay abreast of the latest and greatest research.”
“I became a doctor to help people, to listen when others haven’t and to find out what’s wrong and fix it. I’m thankful every day that I’m able to do that here at CMH,” Dr. Lovano said.
Dr. Lovano described working at Clinton Memorial as being a member of a family who hold themselves accountable. “The staff in our offices, in surgery, and on the floors, they are all so very hardworking, detail-oriented, and they go above and beyond routinely to give that great care,” she said. “We want to provide the best care for our patients because our friends and family are our patients.”
Outside of her professional career caring for Wilmington-area residents, Dr. Lovano and her husband welcomed the birth of their son earlier this year. She also enjoys spending time with their two dogs, reading, painting and watching sports. “Go Eagles!” One of Dr. Lovano’s favorite eateries in Wilmington is The General Denver. “I’ve been known to devour the entire plate of fried green beans,” she said. “They are delicious!”
