Diabetes Prevention & Management
That’s why we’re here.

Diabetes is a prevalent and potentially life-altering condition. It “isn't just a disease ‒ it's an epidemic, affecting over 37 million Americans with devastating consequences,” says the American Diabetes Association (ADA). Understanding your diabetes risk is crucial in preventing its onset or managing it effectively.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how your body processes glucose (sugar). It comes in two types: type 1 and type 2. With type 1, the pancreas does not make the insulin (a hormone that regulates blood sugar) that the body needs. In type 2, the pancreas makes less insulin than the body needs, and the body becomes resistant to insulin. Type 2 is significantly more common.

It’s important to know the risk factors that increase your chances of developing diabetes, including family history, age, and lifestyle choices.

Prevention

Diabetes is preventable. If you do not have diabetes, work with your primary care doctor on the following lifestyle factors to help you avoid it:

  • Becoming or remaining physically active – Discover the benefits of regular exercise in maintaining a healthy weight and reducing diabetes risk.
  • Controlling your blood pressure.
  • Healthy eating – Learn about balanced nutrition and how making the right food choices can help prevent and manage diabetes.
  • Managing your weight – Find resources and advice on achieving and maintaining a healthy weight to lower your diabetes risk.
  • Quitting smoking.
  • Regular check-ups – Routine health check-ups and ongoing communication are essential for diabetes prevention.

Start by making minor modifications to your lifestyle. “Small changes lead to big results,” says the ADA.
