CMH Foundation Gives Back Thousands Annually In Community Benefit

photoThe CMH Foundation distributes hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to help improve the health and wellness of patients served by CMH Regional Health System. Foundation dollars help CMH patients with medication, transportation and other costs that if left unattended would interrupt the continuation of their care and could lead to additional and/or more costly medical treatment.

The CMH Foundation supports uninsured and underinsured patients of Clinton Memorial Hospital and other health system entities such as the Foster J. Boyd, MD, Regional Cancer Center, CMH Diabetes Services and Clinton Community Dental Services.

Year in and year out, the CMH Foundation is there to cover the financial gaps for many CMH patients. Not only do these funds help those who truly want to help themselves, contributions to the CMH Foundation free up money for the health system and the hospital to upgrade and continuously improve the local health care offerings.

The Foundation averages more than $400,000 in annual fund revenue, all of which will ultimately be utilized to benefit current and future patients of CMH Regional Health System entities. This helps CMH offset the millions of dollars in charity care—the total for patients with the inability to pay—that is written off every year as well as the millions in bad debt that is written off—a shortfall created by patients with the ability to pay for services that do not.

Endowed Funds Go For Donor Intent

Additionally, CMH Foundation endowment funds are used for donor intent to improve the hospital and health care system. These funds are used for some capital expenditures and other value-added purchases.

In recent years, endowed funds have been used to establish an integrative medicine program (formerly known as complementary and alternative medicine) at the cancer center, to purchase new technology for the Clinton Memorial Hospital Surgery Center, and to make landscaping improvements to the Hale Arboretum on the hospital campus.

Auxiliary Volunteers At $2 Million And Counting

The CMH Foundation Auxiliary has raised in the neighborhood of $2 million in the last half century, with those proceeds going to the CMH Foundation for the ultimate benefit of CMH patients.

Auxiliary members organize a number of special events during the year—most notably a gala in the spring and golf outing in the summer. “We could certainly not achieve such lofty donor heights without the annual efforts of the members of the auxiliary,” says Dana Dunn, director of Community Development for CMH.

Foundation Created To Support CMH Programs

Though CMH Regional Health System/Clinton Memorial Hospital is a community hospital, it receives no local tax dollars. The CMH Foundation was founded as a separate, tax-exempt, not-for-profit corporation on Sept. 14, 1992 to support the health system. It is an Ohio not-for-profit corporation and tax-exempt, as described in Section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

All funds contributed to the foundation are tax-deductible to the donor under the limits of the law. The CMH Foundation has more than $1.5 million in restricted fund assets, an unrestricted endowment of $1.7 million and a restricted endowment of $1 million.
