Family Medicine Residency Program

International Health

Residents in the CMH/UC Family Practice Residency Program have an opportunity to participate in an international health experience in Brazil. Keith Holten, M.D., program director, is the local coordinator for the Amazonus project.

Through the International Health Program at the University of Cincinnati, Dr. Holten and Sandra Riegler, M.D. have established a relationship with the municipality of Beruri in the Amazon state of Brazil, and they make annual trips to the region. There is now a close relationship with that village and with the 89 villages, that are a part of the municipality.

As a part of the training program, funding is provided for up to two residents per year to use as an April elective to participate in this project. The first two weeks are in Cincinnati with didactic lectures on tropical medicine and international health mission work, followed by two weeks of travel with a team to the Amazon region. Some funding is available based on need.
